Making Abortion Unthinkable Print E-mail

The Sanctity of Life

The reason that Genesis is such an important book in the Bible is that it lays the groundwork for a truly God-centered vision of all life. We are taught in the first chapter that we are humans are uniquely made in the image of God. The “sanctity” of our lives comes from our Creator God not from our earthly parents. This means that all people are precious at all moments of their existence and that does not stem from them but from their God. We believe that “thou shall not murder” is not rooted in human arrogance but in human dependence on the life giving and sustaining power of God. It is interesting that “humanism,” which is the belief that humans are the center of all things, has led to the rise of abortions, while “theism,” which says that God is the center of all things, has led to the belief that all life is precious and needs to be protected.  This means that the groundwork to opposing abortion lies in our submission to the authority of God as the center of all things. When he is the center then his Word becomes the ultimate revealer of right and wrong not human opinion. May God help us to stand for life under Him.

O God, Our Help in Ages Past
One of the great blessings of memory is that we can look back and see many ways that God has been our help in the past. That backward glance gives us hope for the future. Because it assures us that the same God who was good and true back then is still God today and will be forever. I love Isaac Watts hymn, “O God, Our Help in Ages Past” because it takes that truth from Psalm 90 and places it in a beautiful song. ]I pray that  it will be a blessing to you. Here are the words:
O God, our help in ages past, Our hope for years to come, Our shelter from the stormy blast, and our eternal home!
Under the shadow of Thy throne Thy saints have dwelt secure; Sufficient is Thine arm alone, and our defense is sure.
Before the hills in order stood, Or earth received her frame, From everlasting Thou art God, To endless years the same.
A thousand ages in Thy sight Are like an evening gone; Short as the watch that ends the night Before the rising sun.
Time, like an ever-rolling stream, Bears all its sons away; They fly forgotten, as a dream Dies at the op’ning day.
O God, our help in ages past, Our hope for years to come. Be Thou our guide while life shall last, and our eternal home. A-men.
May You Experience the Joy of Being a child of the Everlasting God,

Prayer for the end of Abortion
Lord, you are the giver of all life. You have blessed us by making us in your image. You have called us to reflect your life and love in the world where you have placed us. Father, you are both just and compassionate. You care about all of your creation, but especially about the needs of the weak, the poor, and the suffering. Help us to reflect your justice by speaking up for the unborn who cannot speak for themselves. Help us to reflect your compassion as we minister to women who are dealing with unintended pregnancies. Help us to teach our children, boys and girls, to value all life as precious. Help us to want those “unwanted” children and to make room for them in our lives through the miracle of adoption. Help our church to stand firmly in opposition to the evil of abortion and firmly in support of the good news of grace that brings salvation to all who will believe in Jesus and turn from their sins. Help us to know how to declare these truths in love as empowered by your Holy Spirit.
In Jesus’ Name,

A Biblical Perspective on Abortion
Sanctity of Human Life Sunday
By David J. Brady

Theme: God is the author of life! To kill a baby in the womb is to kill a human being. It is time for us to speak up for those who cannot speak for themselves. It is also time for us to proclaim the unfathomable mercy and grace for all who have had or been involved in abortions if they will renounce their sin and turn to Jesus. Will you join in the spiritual battle to see abortions on demand become both illegal and unthinkable? May this come to pass for the glory of our Father God and the saving of many precious lives.
Five Questions related to the issue of Abortion…
1.)  Is there really a problem?
Since January 22nd, 1973 over 48 million babies have been aborted
There are approximately 6.3 million pregnancies annually    (52% intended/48% unintended)
Of the approximately 3 million unintended pregnancies 47% or 1.3 million are aborted each year
The majority (56%) of women who have abortions are in their twenties
·         One baby is aborted every 24 seconds
·         147 babies are aborted every hour
·         3,542 babies are aborted every day
·         24,865 babies are aborted every week
·         107,750 babies are aborted every month
        Why do women have abortions?
·         74% say having a baby would interfere with work, school, or other responsibilities.
·         73% say they cannot afford to have a child.
·         48% say they do not want to be a single parent, or have relationship problems with husband or partner.
·         Less than 2% say they became pregnant as a result of rape or incest.
2.)Should we even be talking about abortion in church?
Proverbs 31:8-9  Open your mouth for the mute, for the rights of all who are destitute. 9 Open your mouth, judge righteously, defend the rights of the poor and needy.
Psalm 82:3-4 Give justice to the weak and the fatherless; maintain the right of the afflicted and the destitute. 4 Rescue the weak and the needy; deliver them from the hand of the wicked."
Proverbs 24:11 Rescue those who are being taken away to death; hold back those who are stumbling to the slaughter.
3.)What does the Bible say?
Psalm 139:13-16  For you formed my inward parts; you knitted me together in my mother's womb. 14 I praise you, for I am fearfully and wonderfully made. Wonderful are your works; my soul knows it very well. 15 My frame was not hidden from you, when I was being made in secret, intricately woven in the depths of the earth. 16 Your eyes saw my unformed substance; in your book were written, every one of them, the days that were formed for me, when as yet there were none of them.
Jeremiah 1:5 “Before I formed you in the womb I knew you, and before you were born I consecrated you…
James 4:1-2  What causes quarrels and what causes fights among you? Is it not this, that your passions are at war within you? 2 You desire and do not have, so you murder.
"It does not matter whether you take away a life that is born, or destroy one that is coming to the birth. In both instances, the destruction is murder." (Tertullian, Apology, 9.4; second century)
“We kill marriages and we kill unborn babies because they cut across our desires; they stand in the way of our unencumbered self-enhancement. And we live in a culture where self-enhancement and self-advancement is god. And if self-enhancement is god, then the One who is at work in the womb shaping a person in his own image is not God and the assault on his work is not sacrilegious, but obedience to the god of self.” John Piper

     4.)How can we get involved?
2 Corinthians 10:3-5 For though we walk in the flesh, we are not waging war according to the flesh. 4 For the weapons of our warfare are not of the flesh but have divine power to destroy strongholds. 5 We destroy arguments and every lofty opinion raised against the knowledge of God, and take every thought captive to obey Christ…
Pray, speak out, give to LifeLine Pregnancy Help Centers, Volunteer, Adopt, protest, Vote for pro-life candidates who oppose abortion in word and deed
5.) What then is our message to those involved in and supportive of abortion?
Unshakable opposition to abortion and
Unshakable offer of grace to all persons
“But I feel that the greatest destroyer of peace today is abortion, because it is a war against the child, a direct killing of the innocent child, murder by the mother herself.  And if we accept that a mother can kill even her own child, how can we tell other people not to kill one another”?
Mother Teresa
Acts 2:36-39  God has made him both Lord and Christ, this Jesus whom you crucified." 37 Now when they heard this they were cut to the heart, and said to Peter and the rest of the apostles, "Brothers, what shall we do?" 38 And Peter said to them, "Repent and be baptized every one of you in the name of Jesus Christ for the forgiveness of your sins, and you will receive the gift of the Holy Spirit. 39 For the promise is for you and for your children and for all who are far off, everyone whom the Lord our God calls to himself."
Isaiah 49:15-16  15 "Can a woman forget her nursing child, that she should have no compassion on the son of her womb? Even these may forget, yet I will not forget you. 16 Behold, I have engraved you on the palms of my hands; your walls are continually before me.
